Telehealth & Stroke Diagnosis and Management

Tele-stroke is an approach to strokes that provides board certified neurologists the ability to perform immediate, real-time, and/or remote diagnosis and treatment to a stroke victim using telehealth technology.
Overview

This course is designed to provide the practical tenets of stroke telemedicine, in order to provide an appreciation for the unique and pivotal role of telestroke in the wider world of telehealth.

Course Highlights:
  1. The background and importance of various telestroke models and modalities.
  2. An overview of the traditional and emerging technologies and skills for using them effectively in delivering patient care.
  3. Awareness of the underlying evidence base for telehealth in stroke care, as well as the financial and regulatory considerations.
  4. Best practices to ensure quality of care and mitigate the impact of program or technology limitations.
  5. Awareness of the relevant guidelines and statements on the practice of telestroke and program considerations and effective evaluation.
  6. An overview of telestroke in the subacute or chronic care setting, including stroke telerehabilitation and preventive telestroke services in the ambulatory setting.
Learning Objectives:

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Identify the benefits and barriers of a successful telestroke program
  • Recognize the different telestroke clinical models and their application
  • Identify the main technology needed to perform a telestroke care
  • Recognize the role of the technology in an effective telestroke system of care
  • Summarize how to perform a remote neurological exam for a potential stroke patient
  • Recap some issues surrounding reimbursement/legal/regulatory or licensing
Learning Method and Medium:

TelehealthVillage utilizes a variety of media-based learning approaches to facilitate the educational experience that is interactive and web-based. Multiple choice questions are incorporated into the learning process.

Course Development:

TelehealthVillage is a collaborative effort developed by the University of Virginia Karen S. Rheuban Center for Telehealth, the Mid-Atlantic Telehealth Resource Center, the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the New College Institute.
