Telemental/Behavioral Health for Adults

Technology has revolutionized the delivery of mental/behavioral health services, specifically, via widespread expansion of virtual care options. The reliability, speed, portability, and cost of videoconferencing has improved drastically in recent years, allowing telemental health to be accessible and feasible for patients and providers. Since much of the services involve communication, mental healthcare services are well-suited for telehealth to assess, diagnosis, and treat patients for a variety of mental and behavioral health conditions. Moreover, there exists a severe shortage of mental healthcare professionals in the United States, especially in rural and underserved areas. Telemental health allows mental healthcare professionals to more easily reach these rural and underserved areas as well as meet the needs of a varied adult client population. Telemental health also offers flexibility and decreases the likelihood of burnout for mental healthcare professionals.

In this course, we discuss the emerging trends in telemental health, diagnostic techniques for mental health conditions using telehealth, management of mental health conditions using telehealth, benefits of telemental health, and critical policy considerations for telemental health.
